The West African Examinations Council is an examination board that conducts the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, for University and Jamb entry examination in West Africa countries.

Group I

Specimen A – Thermometer

Specimen B – Rain guage

Specimen C – Meter rule

Specimen D – Sweep net

Specimen E – Wind vane

Specimen F – Quadrat.

Specimen G – Filter paper

Specimen H – Quill feather

Specimen J – Palm frond(freshly procured)

Group II  (For candidates in Nigeria and the Gambia only)

Specimen P – Male cockroach

Specimen Q – Grasshopper

Specimen R – Small mammal/Rat/Mouse.

Note:
(i) Specimen, P, Q and R are peculiar to candidates in Nigeria only and should be provided for candidates in Nigeria, Sierra Leone and The Gambia.
(ii) specimens S, T, U, V and W are peculiar to candidates in, Sierra Leone, and the Gambia only and should not be provided for candidates in Ghana.

(iii) All specimens can be provided as group specimens for fifteen(15) candidates.
(iv) All specimens in each group must carry individual labels(e.g A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M in Group I)

Biology Materials:

  1. glass jar cover or petri dish;
  2. scalpel or razor blade;
  3. a beaker;
  4. a pair of forceps;
  5. plain white sheet of paper ;
  6. magnifying lens/hand lens ;
  7. test tubes;
  8. iodine solution;
  9. Razor/knife

Question 1

In addition to the fittings and reagents normally contained in a chemistry laboratory, the following apparatus and materials will be required by each candidate

  1. (a) one burette of 50cm³ capacity.
  2. (b) one pipette, either 20cm³ or 25cm³. All candidates at one centre must use pipettes of the same volume. These should be clean and free from grease.
  3. (c) the usual apparatus for titration.
  4. (d) the usual apparatus and reagents for qualitative work. Including the following with all reagents appropriately labelled.
    (i) dilute sodium hydroxide solution.
    (ii) dilute hydrochloric acid.
    (iii) dilute trioxonitrate(v) acid
    (iv) silver trioxonitrate(v) solution.
    (v) barium chloride solution.
    (vi) aqueous ammonia.
    (vii) lime water.
    (viii) red and blue litmus paper.
    (ix) dilute tetraoxosulphate(vi) acid.
  5. (e) Spatula
  6. (f) filtration apparatus.
  7. (g) one beaker
  8. (h) one boiling tube
  9. (i) four test tubes.
  10. (j) starch solution as indicator.
  11. (k) mathematical table/calculator
  12. (l) wash bottle containing distilled/deionized water.

Each candidate should be supplied with the following, where ‘n’ is  the candidate’s serial number.

  1. (a) 150cm³ of sodium trioxosulphur sulphate(vi) solution in a corked flask or bottle, labelled “An”. These should all be the same containing 6.0g of Na2S2O3 per dm³ of solution.
  2. (b) 150cm³ of iodine in potassium iodide solution in a corked flask or bottle labelled “Bn”. These should all be the same containing 2.5g of I2 and 1.67g of KI per dm³ of solution.
  3. (c) One spatulafull of a uniform mixture of NaCl and CuCO3 in a specimen bottle labelled “Cn”. The components of the mixture should be in the ratio 1:2 by mass
  4. 4. In all cases, more materials may be issued if required.
  5. 5. The actual concentrations of A and B must be stated on the Supervisor’s Report form. The candidates will assume that the concentrations are exactly as stated in the question paper.

  1. Specimen A – Rake
  2. Specimen B – Shears
  3. Specimen C – Shovel
  4. Specimen D – Cutlass
  5. Specimen E – Whelbarrow
  6. Specimen F – Clay soil
  7. Specimen G – Loamy soil
  8. Specimen H – Sandy soil
  9. Specimen I – Earthworm

For specimens G, H and I, you are requested to get some quantity of sandy soil. Divide the quantity of sandy soil into three portions.
Wash the first portion which is to be labelled G with a neutral solution(water) until the soil is neither acidic nor alkaline then air-dry the soil.
To the second portion which is to be labelled H, add some quantity of Hydrochloric acid(HCL) and air-dry.
To the third portion which is to be labelled I, add some quantity of sodium Hydroxide(NaOH) solution and air-dry.
Then supply to each candidate, samples of specimens G, H and each in a beaker, some quantity of water, blue litmus paper, red litmus paper and a
stirrer.
